Leanna Garcia

Spain’s Next Bobsleigh Pioneer

I’m Leanna Garcia, a dedicated athlete on a mission to make sports history.

I have the honor of representing Team Spain as the country’s first female monobob athlete. After years of competing for Team Canada as a brakewoman and earning podium finishes in multiple North American Cup races, I have stepped into the pilot’s seat—embracing the thrilling challenge of learning to drive a bobsled, and earning Spain its first medals in history.

Focused. Driven.
All in.

Born and raised in Canada, I grew up with strong ties to my Spanish heritage. I spent summers in Spain as a child before my dedication to sport took over my life. My passion for athletics started in track and field, eventually leading me to bobsleigh—a sport that demands speed, strength, and precision.

After three years pushing for Team Canada, I seized the opportunity to make history for Spain. Becoming a top-level bobsleigh pilot takes years of experience, and I’ve already begun mastering the world’s most challenging tracks.I won Spain its first medals in the sport and, in 2024, made history as the first woman to represent the country at a bobsleigh World Championships, all after just one year of driving experience.

MY OLYMPIC JOURNEY

MY OLYMPIC JOURNEY

Bobsleigh is a demanding sport, both physically and financially.

Training involves up to four hours a day in the off-season, while the competitive season requires months of global travel. To fully dedicate myself, I made the difficult decision to leave my full-time career behind.

A typical women’s bobsleigh team would race in both the monobob and the two-women events, but due to finances, I competed alone in the monobob event, which had me at a disadvantage. I fought my hardest all winter but experienced many setbacks, such as equipment failure – due to lack of funding – that cost me a race.

Despite all of this, I was only a few points away from qualifying for the 2026 Olympic Games. Unfortunately this severely affected my funding… and the cycle of poor equipment and lack of funding could continue, without your help.

As I refocus and set my eyes on the 2027 World Championships, and 2030 Olympic Games, now more than ever I am looking for support to continue making history for Spain and bring more opportunities for women in sport.

What is bobsleigh?

Bobsleigh is a high-speed winter sport where athletes race down an icy, twisting track in a sled, aiming for the fastest time. There are several disciplines: 2-man, 4-man, and monobob. In 2-man and 4-man events, teams work together to push the sled at the start and then navigate the track with a pilot steering and others acting as brakemen – pulling the brakes to stop the sled at the end. Monobob, introduced for women at the Olympic level in 2022, is a solo event where one athlete is responsible for the push, drive, and brake, making it a true test of individual skill, power, and precision. This is the event I compete in!

For more information check out this video by the Olympic channel – bobsleigh explained by the legendary 4-man pilot Steve Holcomb. Although he talks about the 4-man event, most of the principles apply to monobob as well.
